All You Need to Know About Carpet Materials

Because the fibres used in the manufacture of carpets determine in a very large proportion their appearance and functionality, our Bath carpet fitters pay close attention to this aspect when helping you choose the carpet for your home or office. The most commonly used fibres for carpets are nylon, polypropylene, polyester, acrylic and wool.

Nylon – Nylon fibres are durable, resistant to dirt and mould, but also to the pressure exerted by furniture. They are a good carpet choice in a room with heavy traffic, being also very resilient. Many of our Bath carpet clients choose nylon for children’s room.

Polypropylene – Among the most common fibres used in the manufacture of carpets is polypropylene. It is resistant to moisture and prevents mould formation. Polypropylene carpets are easy to clean and very durable. The polypropylene is coloured before the material is turned into fibres, which means that the carpet will not discolour easily.

Polyester – If you want to choose a luxury-looking carpet with high density and extremely soft, then polyester is the perfect choice for you. These fibres are resistant, but not like nylon or polypropylene. Currently, many polyester carpets are made from recycled PETs, so buying a carpet from this material is a good opportunity to help protect the environment.

Acrylic – Although there are no 100% acrylic carpets, these fibres are often used in wool blends because their appearance is similar to natural fibres, but the price is much lower. Acrylic fibres are resistant to moisture and prevent mould formation, so a carpet that has an acrylic composition can be suitable for the kitchen.

Wool – The best carpets are made of natural fibres such as wool, but they come with a higher price for the higher quality. The wool is durable, dense, soft to touch and available in a wide variety of colours. If the budget is not a challenge, our Bath carpet experts recommend you to choose a wool carpet instead of a synthetic one.
