The Mendip Vale Medical practice serves over 50,000 patients across Bristol and North Somerset including sites at Congresbury, Langford, Monks Park, St Georges and Sunnyside.

Their practice in Yatton cares for more than 14,000 patients, however with the requirements for major improvements the Bristol, North East Somerset and South Gloucestershire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) invested £171,000 to improve its facilities. This included the renovation to be focused on accessible access for disabled patients and the improvement of infection control.

The Brief

To supply and install safety flooring which was highly durable, hygienic and aesthetically pleasing: to be warm and welcoming. As the practice was fully operational throughout its renovation under Covid-19 regulations, the project operations had to be safe. This required a flooring supplier who had experience on commercial projects; one that could supply a workforce with the ability to complete the project within the timeframe and able to provide a high-quality technical service.

Reedec Painting and Decorating Contractors Ltd asked Virtuoso Flooring to tender for the flooring works.  During various consultation meetings and site visits we showcased our expertise and were competitively priced.  Although not the cheapest on the tender, Virtuoso were awarded the work based on their experience and ability to work under tight deadlines.

Hygienic and Durable Safety Flooring from Polyflor

Commencing in June 2020, the project plan was to undertake the work in a three-phase strategy and to complete by the New Year. This enabled the surgery to continue operating and during the project

There were several different safety flooring styles chosen throughout the surgery, fully hot seemed with colour match weld and capped and coved 100mm up walls. This type of vinyl is able to endure high level traffic and withstand the health and safety needs of the practice; anti-slip surface, non-trip texture, spillage can be easily and quickly cleaned. Additionally, the cap and cove finish keeping  environments hygienic and easy to clean, therefore, fundamentally why it is used in areas where health and safety are of a paramount concern.

Polyflor wood FX pure effect vinyl, colour Rustic Oak was chosen for communal spaces including the waiting room, reception and corridorsThe wood/oak-inspired style provided warmth and a welcoming aesthetic to the surgery. Providing a homely style would hopefully reduce the anxiety a medical centre stimulates. For the treatment rooms Polyflor Verona Pur Vinyl in Dolphin Grey was chosen for its practicality and clean clinical appearance. A heavy commercial ribbed matting was installed in the entrance to remove shoe dirt before entering the Centre.

The Result

Overall, Yatton surgery is now a modernised medical centre which is accessible and safe for all its patients and staff.  In addition, to the removal of carpet in the consultation rooms to beautifully installed vinyl floors, it now has two new clinical rooms which were converted from admin space, increasing the number of clinical rooms available in the surgery by 15 per cent. New hand basins with elbow operated taps, specifically designed to reduce the spread of infection. Further improvements included wider doorways, a new touch-free automatic front door and a lower desk to make the building more accessible for people with disabilities.

From Virtuoso Flooring perspective the work went smoothly. Installing the flooring within the project time frame, within budget and to a high-quality standard. This project was a great opportunity to work with other trades, helping to create a new space which is exceptionally important during this time.
